Dear Abby, you REALLY blew this one!

June 17, 2012

Dear Abby,

I’ve never written to you before, but your column today demands a response.

A citizen pointed out that, due to budget cuts, some librarians don’t have time to coach patrons in how to use the library’s computers.  Your response was to urge readers to write to their members of Congress!

Good grief, the last thing our public libraries need is political meddling from Congress. The early development of America’s terrific public libraries was the result of LOCAL (not national) efforts by CITIZENS (not politicians).

Any good local library can recruit community volunteers to handle just about anything the professional librarians can’t do — including coaching library patrons who need help with their computer skills.

Congress has a sad record of overstepping its proper roles and of mismanaging almost everything it touches.  Heck, they can’t even pass a federal budget.  And you tell your readers to get Congress involved in our local libraries!

Dear Abby, you deserve 40 lashes with a wet bookmark for today’s column!
